Wiring a Johnson A19 Controller
Home > Gear > Wiring a Johnson A19 Controller
I wanted a second temperature controller to use, in addition to my
Love Controls TS-13010 controller, but I
didn't want to spend a lot of money. I found a new Johnson A19ABA-40C
on Ebay that I got for $16 shipped. This is commonly used by homebrewers and
wiring it up is easy. Temperature controllers can be used for controlling
the temperature of a freezer or refrigerator for fermenting beer in, or a
kegerator.
| If you are using this for a fermentation refrigerator or freezer,
you COULD wire this directly inline with the appliance's power cord. I decided
to wire it to an extension cord so that I could move it between refrigerators.
Parts Needed:
Cable Clamp for romex cable
Johnson A19 Controller
Extension Cord. I used 16ga which should be fine for a refrigerator
Wire Nut (not pictured)

Cut about a foot off the outlet end of the extension cord, or
cut more depending on where you want to mount the controller in relation to the
appliance's power cord
Strip back about two or three inches of the outer insulation of both pieces of
the extension cord, and then strip off a half of an inch of the insulation of
the individual wires inside the cords. Twist each individual exposed wire so
that the ends are not frayed
|
| Attach the cable clamp onto the controller using the hole in the
bottom of the controller. Loosen the two screws on the clamp to allow the
extension cord wire to pass through. |

Insert both ends of the extension cord into the cable clamp,
and pull through.
Twist the two white wires together and fasten with a wire nut.
Twist the two green wires together, form the end into a backwards question mark,
and fasten the pair under the green screw on the housing of the controller.
Take black wires, and form them each into backwards questions marks and fasten
them under each of the gold screws on the body of the controller.
Check to make sure that there aren't any stray wires touching where they shouldn't.
Now tighen the two screws on the cable clamp so the cords will not pull out, and
put the cover back on the controller.
Enjoy temperature controller fermentation or serving!
